Mill Pond Preserve Progress Report, May 6th 2007. This from Franz...
We had a great turn out today, but not enough for the two projects hoped for. We were able to clear a new trail to the abundant laurel crop existing between MPP and the property bordering route 2 and south of our entrance drive. This trail starts at the parking area at the short, 150' stone wall and heads south almost to the shopping area where it turns to join the Fern trail. Laurel Loop might be a fitting trail name but need other suggestions? This new trail is ready for foot traffic and will improve with use and modest attention, thanks to our volunteers!

    Annual Meeting, September 8th 2006.

Generous Donation. July 2006 - South County Conservancy has recently received a donation of a beautiful piece of property, which connects Ninigret Pond with Charlestown Beach Road. This land and the area surrounding it, comprise a critical habitat of sand dunes, marshes and wetlands. Here is the Official Press Release.

Earth Day Celebration April 22nd 2006 - See the flyer here.

67 Acres Preserved! April 2006 - We are pleased to announce the recent acquisition of environmental easements on a large part of the former Amos Green Farm. These easements extend a continuous greenway from the Carter Preserve (800 acres), across the Carolina Back Road through the Ricci and Fenner lands to Sand Plain Road. Here is the Official Press Release.

This unique project took years of meetings and negotiations between members of the Fenner and Ricci families, South County Conservancy, and the funding agencies. Funds were provided by the Town of Charlestown, the State of Rhode Island, Agricultural Land Preservation Commission, and The Nature Conservancy.

Annual Meeting, September 9th 2005. Please come to our tenth Annual meeting at 7 PM at the Boze Arnold Barn. From route 1A in Cross Mills, Charlestown, turn on to East Arnolda Road and follow the SCC signs.

There is much to catch up on! After two years at the Octagon House in Carolina we have finally moved into our new office at the newly constructed U.S. Fish and Wildlife building. We will also introduce our new Executive Director.

A silent auction and raffle will also be part of the meeting with items contributed by many local area merchants and residents. A three hour pontoon boat ride across the pond from Ocean House Marina, a meal at The Cooked Goose, an antique duck decoy from the collection of Peter Arnold, and Carole Browne's bread are just some of the items to bid on. Speaking at the meeting will be Janis Nepshinsky, Recreation Planner for U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The educational opportunities and resources of the USFWS in RI will be her topic. A chance to chat and have refreshments will occur both before and after the meeting.

Earth Day, April 23rd 2005, had special significance for South County Conservancy this year. We opened the Mill Pond Preserve trail system to the public at a well attended ceremony.

The trail system was built by volunteers this past winter and we hope you will come out and enjoy the property. Woodlands, pond views and the remains of an old trout hatchery make it an interesting piece of land to explore. Come anytime dawn till dusk. Mill Pond Preserve is located at 4962 South County Trail (route 2), one half mile north of Route 1.

Trail building. Due to popular demand, we added a second shift to the work day schedule at the Mill Pond Preserve on Sunday March 20th and April 10th 2005. The two shifts were 10-12 and 12-2, and were well attended.
